Whoa. So, I was just thinking to myself how Morgan doesn't update her blog as much as I'd like (ahem, http://the818.com/), when I clicked on her link to mine and realized--WAIT. I haven't posted a blog in an entire WEEK! Obviously, I've been busy, right?
Right. Actually, things have been crazy.
Aside from being a total banana with my school work, I also just returned from a four day jaunt to New York City to play a SOLD OUT(!) Damnwells show at the Mercury Lounge. THAT was pretty cool. We saw all of our New York friends (again, too briefly, but still), and had dinner at an incredible little place called Lil Frankie's that I can't wait to go to again next time around. Their burrata was amazing, Alex and I shared my favorite mussels ever, and I had an absolutely killer steak. The one thing that I miss the most about living in a real city is the FOOD. Oh, the food...
The show was super fun. The sound mix to the crowd could have been better and we couldn't really hear ourselves onstage, but it was still a great show. Our friend Courtney (pictured above, far right), from the band Kaiser Cartel, even joined us for a couple songs so we could sing some 3-part harmonies (on Golden Days and Kung Fu Grip Kiss). She is such a pro and has an incredible voice. If you appreciate fabulous music, you should really check out Kaiser Cartel. :)
It's interesting to see how each different place we play sounds to us. Sometimes, I can hear myself through the monitors, but other times, I just have to count on the way the notes feel in my throat when I sing them. For this show, I kept experimenting with earplugs--I'd try a song without them, a song with just one, or a song with both, and so on. It was a constant battle to find the best configuration, but I settled on just one in my right ear for most of the songs. Fun stuff.
So, there you have it. Another whirl wind trip down. I just took Alex to the airport so he can go back to New York this weekend, the poor dear. The band (sans me, obviously) is playing a radio station's birthday party upstate, but I have play rehearsals and homework that I really need to focus in on for the remainder of the semester. It should be nice to get some work done here in this quiet little house, but I've gotta tell you--I miss him already.
